
Applications are now being accepted for the Grist climate fiction writing story contest. Grist is thrilled to launch the fourth annual Imagine 2200: Climate Fiction for Future Ancestors short story contest. Imagine 2200 beckons writers worldwide to envision a future where solutions to the climate crisis thrive, catalyzing radical improvements in our world.
The Concept:
Imagine 2200 embraces narratives that contemplate the forthcoming decades to centuries of fair climate advancement, envisioning futures characterized by abundance, adaptation, reform, and optimism. We seek stories grounded in inventive climate solutions and community-centered resilience, depicting the evolution of these solutions and offering compelling plots with vibrant characters and settings to bring this future to life.
In 2,500 to 5,000 words, portray the world you aspire to construct.
Prizes:
- The top writer will receive a prize of $3,000.
- Second and third place winners will be awarded $2,000 and $1,000, respectively.
- Additionally, nine finalists will each receive $300.
- All winners and finalists will have their stories published in an immersive collection on Grist’s website.
Preparing Your Story File:
Upload your short story as a word document (.doc accepted; .docx preferred). Name your word document in the following format: title of your story – YEAR; e.g., Story Title – 2024. Omit any identifying biographical information (including your name) from the document. On the first page of your document, include your story’s title and word count at the top in Arial 14-point font. The rest of your document should be in Arial 12-point font with double line spacing and at least one-inch margins. All document pages should feature a header in the upper right-hand corner containing the correct sequential page number, starting on page 1, and your story’s title.
